how did war transform civilian life?
World War I devastated civilians on a large scale. They basically became a military target. The economic impact mean that there was shortages in produce. Consequently, rationing of bread, tea, sugar, and meat occurred in 1918. Living standards plummeted. During the war, 8 to 10 million soldiers were killed in battle, and 22 million were injured. THis meant that almost every family lost someone. Also, false propaganda made people think that everything was okay, when really many people were dying.
the role of women
World War I also had a large impact on the role of women. With all the men at war as soldiers, Women began working as a living. This became very crucial in 1915, as the crisis began. Woman began working in coal mines and factories. The Women's land army was formed in 1917. They strove to maximize the country's outcome and to feed the nation.

what is propaganda? what was its role?
Propaganda was information or ads used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or viewpoint and was a way of political strategy. Propaganda during World War I would not let people see how the war actually was. THe propaganda would imply that everything is going great and that there was nothing to worry about, when really so many people were dying, but this wasn't known until after the Battle of the Somme.
propaganda during wwi...
This propaganda is telling the people that the soldiers are doing much better now that they have all this new industry and that everything is okay because they have all this to protect themselves, when really, this stuff is what is mostly killing them off.

This poster from WWI is saying that the people should use up less food and other goods so that the soldiers have more than enough so they can stay healthy, and people would use up less, thinking about the soldiers and how to help them. This propaganda and the action of using up less food so the soldiers have enough made the people think that the soldiers were well taken care, healthy, and had enough food, when actually, it was the complete opposite. The food old, tasteless, and there would be very little of it. also the soldiers weren't healthy because of the conditions they were in from being in trenches and being over-worked with little rest.
